XP curves are really time curves

Players do not experience “10,000 XP.” They experience how long the next reward takes.

Start with the earning rate

An XP requirement only has meaning relative to XP earned per minute or hour. A level costing 5,000 XP can be fast or painfully slow depending on the activities available to the player.

Watch compounding growth

Increasing each level's requirement by a percentage creates exponential growth. Small percentages become large differences across dozens of levels, so always inspect the full curve instead of only the first few levels.

Convert to sessions

If a typical player session is 30–60 minutes, translate leveling time into sessions. “Three sessions per level” is often easier to reason about than raw XP.

Compare multiple curves

The best balancing pass often comes from comparing two or three candidate growth formulas side by side and identifying where pacing changes too sharply.
